How to use the Fraction Calculator

Enter two fractions, choose an arithmetic operation, and receive a reduced exact fraction, mixed-number view, and decimal value.

Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions and simplify the exact result. Decimal output provides a second view without replacing the reduced fractional form.

Fieldlet calculates locally and shows a practical estimate. Confirm consequential financial, contractual, health, or compliance decisions with an authoritative source.

  1. Enter integer numerators and nonzero denominators for both fractions.
  2. Choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  3. Fieldlet performs exact integer fraction arithmetic and reduces the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.

Worked examples

Add unlike denominators

Scenario: Calculate 2/3 + 5/8.

Result: The exact result is 31/24, or 1 7/24, approximately 1.2917.

A common denominator of 24 gives 16/24 + 15/24 = 31/24. The numerator and denominator share no factor greater than one.

How the result is produced

Addition and subtraction use a common denominator; multiplication multiplies corresponding terms; division multiplies by the reciprocal. The greatest common divisor reduces the final numerator and denominator.

  • a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd
  • a/b × c/d = ac/bd
  • Dividing by a zero fraction is undefined

Prefer the exact fraction when precision matters

The reduced fraction preserves the exact rational result, while the decimal display may round after a limited number of places. The mixed-number view is a reading convenience and represents the same value as the improper fraction.

  • Use the reduced fraction for later exact arithmetic.
  • Use the mixed number for ordinary measurement wording.
  • Do not enter zero as a denominator or divide by a zero-valued fraction.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Very large integers can exceed safe browser number precision.
  • A decimal approximation may repeat or round even when the fraction is exact.

Common questions

Why can a denominator not be zero?

Division by zero is undefined, so a fraction with denominator zero is not a valid number and Fieldlet will not calculate it.

Why is the result improper?

An improper fraction is an exact result whose numerator is at least its denominator. Convert it to the displayed mixed number if that form is easier to read.
