How to use the Area Converter

Convert common metric and imperial area measurements for rooms, land, property, maps, and general calculations.

Convert surface area among square metric units, square imperial units, acres, and hectares. Area factors are squared, so they are not the same as linear length factors.

The conversion runs locally using the stated factors or formulas. Keep enough precision for the task and verify regulated or engineering work against its controlling standard.

  1. Enter an area value.
  2. Choose the original unit and target unit.
  3. Fieldlet converts through square meters and displays the result.

Worked examples

Convert acres to hectares

Scenario: A parcel is 10 acres.

Result: 10 acres is approximately 4.04686 hectares.

One international acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters, and one hectare is 10,000 square meters.

Convert a room area

Scenario: A rectangular floor is measured as 250 square feet and a metric planning value is needed.

Result: 250 ft² equals approximately 23.2258 m².

The exact supported factor is 0.09290304 square meters per square foot, multiplied by 250.

How the result is produced

Every unit is converted through square meters. For a derived square length, the linear factor must be squared; one square foot contains 144 square inches, not 12.

  • 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters
  • 1 square foot = 144 square inches
  • Area conversion does not determine the area of an irregular shape

Area factors must be squared

Area measures a two-dimensional surface. When each side changes by a linear factor, the area changes by that factor twice. This is why square feet cannot reuse the ordinary foot-to-meter factor.

  • 1 ft² = 0.3048² m² = 0.09290304 m².
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m².
  • 1 acre = 43,560 ft².

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Land records can use historical survey definitions or legally recorded values.
  • Rounding should match the precision of the original survey or measurement.

Common questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

One acre equals 43,560 square feet.

Why do I square the length conversion factor?

Area has two dimensions. Since one foot is 12 inches, one square foot is 12 × 12 = 144 square inches.
