How to use the Data Size Converter

Convert storage and data-size units while keeping decimal SI units separate from binary IEC units.

Convert digital storage quantities across bytes, decimal units such as MB and GB, and binary units such as MiB and GiB. The distinction explains many apparent capacity differences.

The conversion runs locally using the stated factors or formulas. Keep enough precision for the task and verify regulated or engineering work against its controlling standard.

  1. Enter the size you want to convert.
  2. Choose a decimal or binary source unit.
  3. Fieldlet converts through bytes before expressing the value in the destination unit.

Worked examples

Compare GB and GiB

Scenario: A drive is marketed as 500 GB and the user wants the approximate binary size.

Result: 500 GB is about 465.66 GiB.

500,000,000,000 bytes divided by 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB gives approximately 465.66.

How the result is produced

Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000, while IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Fieldlet converts through a byte base so the two systems are not silently treated as equivalent.

  • 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes
  • 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • Eight bits equal one byte, but network speeds are often quoted in bits per second

Decimal and binary prefixes are both valid

MB and GB use powers of 1,000, while MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024. The converted byte total is consistent; the apparent difference comes from dividing those bytes by a different unit size and sometimes labeling the result imprecisely.

  • Use MB or GB for decimal product specifications.
  • Use MiB or GiB when binary units are intended.
  • Do not confuse bytes with bits used in many network-speed labels.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Formatted storage capacity is lower after file-system metadata and reserved space.
  • Some operating systems label binary quantities with decimal abbreviations, which can cause naming confusion.

Common questions

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

A megabyte uses 1,000,000 bytes, while a mebibyte uses 1,048,576 bytes.

Why does a 1 TB drive show less than 1 TB?

Manufacturers usually use decimal terabytes, while some software displays the same bytes in binary units and the file system also consumes space.
