How to use the Favicon Generator

Generate several common square PNG icon sizes from one source image. Fieldlet fits the complete source inside each square instead of stretching it.

Create common square PNG favicon sizes from one source image in the browser. The downloads are PNG assets and are not mislabeled as a multi-image .ico file.

The selected image is decoded and processed in the browser. Keep the original until the downloaded output has been opened and checked on the target device.

  1. Choose a JPEG, PNG, or WebP source image.
  2. Generate 32×32, 180×180, 192×192, and 512×512 transparent PNG canvases.
  3. Download the icon sizes you need and reference the appropriate files from your site or app manifest.

Worked examples

Generate browser icon sizes

Scenario: A square 1024 × 1024 logo is selected and 32 × 32 plus 180 × 180 outputs are requested.

Result: Two verified PNG files are produced at the selected pixel dimensions.

The source is drawn to a square canvas for each requested size and encoded as PNG.

How the result is produced

The browser resamples the source to each target size. Transparent PNG works well for icons, but small outputs need simple shapes and sufficient contrast to remain recognizable.

  • Outputs are PNG files, not ICO containers
  • Use a square source or review any crop behavior
  • Fine details often disappear at 16 or 32 pixels

Limitations and common mistakes

  • The tool does not generate a true .ico file with multiple embedded sizes.
  • Browser and operating-system caches can delay visible favicon changes after deployment.

Common questions

Does this create a Windows .ico file?

No. Fieldlet generates PNG favicon and app-icon sizes because browsers can use PNG icons directly; it does not label a PNG file as ICO.

Where is the .ico download?

Fieldlet intentionally labels these outputs as PNG. True ICO generation requires a reviewed ICO encoder and is not claimed by this tool.
