How to use the Image Color Picker

Sample colors from a browser-rendered JPEG, PNG, or WebP by clicking, tapping, using arrow keys, or entering preview coordinates. Copy the HEX value and inspect RGB, alpha, and pixel position.

Sample a pixel from a selected image and copy its color as HEX while inspecting RGB, alpha, and preview coordinates. Pointer, arrow-key, and exact X/Y controls all operate on the local rendered preview.

The selected image is decoded and processed in the browser. Keep the original until the downloaded output has been opened and checked on the target device.

  1. Choose an image and let Fieldlet draw a bounded interactive preview.
  2. Click or tap a pixel, focus the preview and use arrow keys, or enter exact X and Y coordinates.
  3. Fieldlet reads the rendered red, green, blue, and alpha channels and converts the RGB channels to a six-digit HEX value.

Worked examples

Sample a brand accent

Scenario: A user clicks a blue pixel whose channels are red 51, green 102, and blue 204.

Result: The color is shown as rgb(51, 102, 204) and #3366CC.

Each decimal channel is converted to a two-digit hexadecimal pair and concatenated in red-green-blue order.

How the result is produced

The browser decodes the image to canvas pixels. Pointer or keyboard coordinates are clamped to the preview bounds, and the selected pixel's red, green, blue, and alpha channels are read directly from the canvas.

  • Arrow keys move one preview pixel and Shift moves ten
  • Exact X and Y fields help reproduce a sample
  • Transparent pixels include an alpha value
  • Color-managed displays and profiles can affect visual appearance

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Sampling one raster pixel does not identify an official brand color or printing specification.
  • Anti-aliasing, compression, shadows, and transparency can create many nearby shades.

Common questions

Why can a sampled color differ slightly from another editor?

Color management, image profiles, browser rendering, and preview scaling can influence displayed pixels, so this is best treated as a browser-rendered color sampler.

Can I sample a color with the keyboard?

Yes. Focus the preview and use the arrow keys, or edit the labelled X and Y coordinate fields. Hold Shift while pressing an arrow for a 10-pixel step.

Why is the picked edge color different from the solid center?

Anti-aliasing blends edge pixels with the background, so sample a flat interior area when you want the source fill color.
