How to use the Final Exam Calculator

See what your final course grade would be for any final-exam score. Use the scenario table to compare outcomes before the exam.

Estimate the final-exam score needed when the exam has a known percentage weight. This is a focused planning view for one remaining assessment rather than a full list of graded categories.

Fieldlet performs the calculation locally. Compare important academic results with the grading policy published by the relevant instructor or institution.

  1. Your current grade is applied to the non-final portion of the course.
  2. Your chosen exam score is multiplied by the final-exam weight.
  3. The two weighted portions are added to produce your projected course grade.

Worked examples

Plan for a 25% final

Scenario: A student has an 88% current grade, the final is worth 25%, and the desired course grade is 85%.

Result: The student needs 76% on the final.

The current 75% of the course contributes 66 points. Reaching 85 requires 19 more points, and 19 ÷ 0.25 = 76.

How the result is produced

The tool treats the course as two portions: everything completed and the final exam. It subtracts the completed contribution from the target, then divides the remaining points by the exam weight.

  • Completed weight = 100% − final weight
  • Required exam score = (target − current grade × completed share) ÷ final share
  • Use the current grade before the final, not a grade that already includes a placeholder final score

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Multiple remaining assignments cannot be represented as one exam unless they truly share the same assumed score.
  • Some gradebooks display a current grade that excludes or includes missing work differently.

Common questions

Is this the same as the Final Grade Calculator?

No. This tool starts with an exam score and projects your course grade. The Final Grade Calculator starts with a target course grade and solves for the exam score you need.

Can I use this for a midterm?

Yes, if the midterm is the only score being planned and its weight plus the completed share covers the grading basis you entered.
