How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

Use this when different parts of a class contribute different percentages to the final grade. Add each score and its weight to calculate the weighted average.

Model a grade made of named categories such as homework, quizzes, labs, and exams. The calculator is designed for category-based syllabi where each average contributes a fixed share of the course.

Fieldlet performs the calculation locally. Compare important academic results with the grading policy published by the relevant instructor or institution.

  1. Each score is multiplied by its percentage weight.
  2. The weighted points are added together.
  3. If the entered weights total less than or more than 100%, Fieldlet also shows the normalized current average across the weights entered.

Worked examples

Calculate a category-weighted average

Scenario: Homework is 94% at 30%, quizzes are 86% at 20%, and exams are 78% at 50%.

Result: The weighted course grade is 84.4%.

The contributions are 28.2, 17.2, and 39 points. Their sum is 84.4 because the category weights total 100%.

How the result is produced

A category's contribution is its average multiplied by its share of the course. Fieldlet totals the contributions and normalizes by the entered weights when they do not yet add to 100%.

  • Use category averages, not category point totals
  • Check that the same assignment is represented in only one category
  • Use decimal scores only if the gradebook reports that precision

Limitations and common mistakes

  • This model does not automatically drop a lowest score within a category.
  • Extra-credit categories can follow rules that a simple weighted average cannot infer.

Common questions

Can I enter category averages?

Yes. For example, enter Homework 92% at 25%, Exams 84% at 50%, and Projects 96% at 25%.

What is the difference from the Grade Calculator?

This version emphasizes a syllabus's category weights. The general Grade Calculator can also model individual weighted items or a partial set of completed work.
