How to use the Random Name Picker

Paste one name per line, choose how many to select, and decide whether selected names should remain eligible for later draws.

Select one or more names from a pasted list for classroom participation, chores, small giveaways, or turn-taking. A no-repeat option can remove selected names from later draws until the local draw history is cleared.

The selection runs in the browser and the entered list is not sent to Fieldlet. Agree on eligibility and reroll rules before using randomness with a group.

  1. Enter the available names, one per line.
  2. Choose how many names to select and whether to remove them from later draws.
  3. Pick again from the complete list or the remaining no-repeat pool, then clear draw history when you want to restart.

Worked examples

Pick the next discussion leader

Scenario: Twelve student names are pasted on separate lines and one name is selected.

Result: One of the twelve entries is returned as the chosen leader.

The picker trims blank lines, creates an eligible list, and chooses an index across that list. A duplicate name would count as an additional entry.

How the result is produced

The probability for an entry is one divided by the number of eligible lines when every name appears once. Exact duplicate lines increase that person's chance, so list review matters.

  • Use one participant per line
  • Exact duplicate lines are collapsed before drawing
  • Choose no-repeat mode when a selected name should leave the later pool

With replacement or without replacement

Ordinary draws reuse the complete eligible list each time, so a name can appear again. No-repeat draws keep a browser-local history and remove selected names from the next pool, which is useful for building a complete participation order.

  • Review the eligible count before the first draw.
  • Use no-repeat mode for turn-taking.
  • Clear draw history only when the group agrees to restart.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • The tool cannot verify identity or whether every eligible participant was included.
  • Use an independently supervised process for regulated or high-value drawings.

Common questions

Can the same person be selected twice in one pick?

No. A single selection returns unique names from the list.

Can the same person be picked twice?

Yes when no-repeat mode is off. Enable removal from later draws to keep each selected name out until you clear the draw history or change the list.
