How to use the Character Counter

Track total characters, characters excluding whitespace, words, and lines. Set an optional character limit to see how much space remains while you type.

Count all characters and characters excluding whitespace for social posts, metadata, form fields, identifiers, and editing checks. Updates are immediate as the text changes.

The text stays in the browser while the tool analyzes or transforms it. Review the output before using it in a graded, published, legal, or accessibility-sensitive document.

  1. Paste or type text into the editor.
  2. Fieldlet counts every character and separately counts characters after whitespace is removed.
  3. If you enter a limit, the progress indicator shows whether the text is within or over that target.

Worked examples

Check a short description limit

Scenario: A form permits 160 characters including spaces, and the draft description contains 174.

Result: The draft is 14 characters over the stated limit.

Every letter, digit, punctuation mark, line break, and space contributes to the including-whitespace total.

How the result is produced

The tool reports the JavaScript string length used by the browser and a second total after whitespace is removed. Some complex emoji can contain several underlying code units even though they look like one symbol.

  • Including spaces counts visible spacing and line breaks
  • Excluding spaces removes whitespace, not punctuation
  • Platform counters may use Unicode code points, bytes, or special URL rules

Match the destination's counting rule

Character limits are not universal. A form may count UTF-16 code units, Unicode code points, bytes, visible grapheme clusters, or transformed URLs, so Fieldlet's browser count should be compared with the destination when an exact limit controls submission.

  • Use the all-character total for ordinary form limits.
  • Use no-whitespace only when the rule explicitly excludes it.
  • Paste the final text into the destination before relying on a hard limit.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • A displayed emoji or combined accent can be more than one underlying character to a browser.
  • External platforms may shorten links or reserve characters, producing a different usable limit.

Common questions

Do spaces count as characters?

The main character total includes spaces and line breaks. A separate count shows characters with whitespace removed.

Are line breaks counted?

Yes in the all-character total because a line break is stored as whitespace. It is omitted from the no-whitespace total.
