How to use the Time Duration Calculator

Calculate elapsed clock time between a start and end time, with overnight ranges treated as ending on the following day.

Find elapsed hours and minutes between two clock times, including intervals that cross midnight. It is helpful for shifts, travel segments, sessions, and schedules.

Fieldlet calculates locally and shows a practical estimate. Confirm consequential financial, contractual, health, or compliance decisions with an authoritative source.

  1. Choose the start time and end time.
  2. Fieldlet converts both clock times to minutes after midnight.
  3. If the end is earlier, one day is added before calculating elapsed hours and minutes.

Worked examples

Calculate an overnight interval

Scenario: A shift starts at 10:30 PM and ends at 6:15 AM the next day.

Result: The duration is 7 hours 45 minutes.

The end is treated as the following day because it is earlier on the clock than the start; 465 minutes separate the times.

How the result is produced

Times are converted to minutes after midnight. If the intended end crosses midnight, one day is added before subtracting the start. The difference is then split into hours and remaining minutes.

  • Total minutes = adjusted end − start
  • Hours = whole total minutes ÷ 60
  • Break time must be subtracted separately when it should not count

Clock duration is not a dated timestamp interval

This tool models at most one overnight clock interval. It does not know the calendar date or time zone, so a real interval crossing a daylight-saving change can be an hour shorter or longer than the displayed wall-clock difference.

  • Use it for ordinary same-day or overnight schedules.
  • Use dated timestamps when a time-zone transition matters.
  • Subtract breaks with the separate Hours Calculator when needed.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Date-specific daylight-saving changes are not represented by clock times alone.
  • Payroll rules may round time, deduct breaks, or apply overtime policies differently.

Common questions

Can this calculate an overnight shift?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, Fieldlet treats the end as occurring the next day.

How does the tool know the end is tomorrow?

When the end clock time is earlier than the start, the calculator treats it as the next day for an overnight interval.
